A courageous ex-policeman saw off three youths he suspected of trying to break into a Colchester social club.
Mick Saunders, of Defoe Crescent, Mile End, gave chase when he stumbled on the trio.
The 54-year-old had volunteered to be a designated driver and take fellow members home from the Wivern Club, at the old Turner Village Hospital site in Colchester, so no-one would be tempted to drink and drive.
He did his rounds in a vehicle owned by the organisation and then returned to pick up his own car.
As he walked up to the club building, the three youths emerged from the darkness and knocked him to the ground.
He ran after the group, staying on their tail as they headed into High Woods Country Park.
It was later discovered a window had been broken at the club, but nothing was missing.
