Members of Castle Point Wildlife Action Group are using mechanical diggers to improve the ponds situated in the heart of North Benfleet Hall Woods.
Graham Ash, a volunteer with the group, said over the years the ponds had dried out due to the hot weather and needed leaves and debris shifted.
He said: "We are working hard to make the ponds look how they used to so they are an attractive feature of the woods.
"Once we have cleared the drainage ditches leading to both ponds, surface water should once again be able to flow into them."
