The former cinema is set to be developed as a state-of-the-art university building, linked with the new campus for South East Essex College on the adjoining site.

Work will cost £23million with more than £14million coming through the Thames Gateway initiative.

The development will include four new schools for health and social care, education, business and arts and cultural industries.

These will all offer both undergraduate and post graduate courses up to doctorates and masters degrees.
