A Tory MP has called on the Government to tighten a loophole in the law allowing offenders named on the Sex Offenders' Register to work as home education tutors.
Billericay and District MP John Baron urged Home Office minister Paul Goggins to act during a Commons debate.
He highlighted a story in the Evening Echo earlier this year which revealed John Bridge, 53, of Cliff Avenue, Westcliff, was able to continue tutoring despite receiving a caution for possessing indecent images of children on his home computer.
Bridge, barred from teaching in state schools, continued to run a private tuition business through the Yellow Pages and a website.
Speaking after his debate, Mr Baron said: "There is a small loophole in the law whereby those cautioned for an offence and on the Sex Offenders' Register can advertise and undertake home tutoring on a one-to-one basis."
Mr Baron admitted he was pleased as Mr Goggins had admitted this "loophole" was an issue the Government would look into.
