The hard work of Sam Mott, Luke Philips, James Caulfield and Greg Allen, all 17, has paid off. It means phase one of the work on the £110,000 skatepark will begin soon.

The teenagers, all members of Canvey's Images Youth Centre skatepark committee, convinced Essex County Council's youth service their project warranted the cash.

Youth worker Sue Daniels said: "We're really proud of them. Work on the first stage is now imminent and it's thanks to the fund-raising efforts of people like those on the skatepark committee.

"There are three stages. The first is the construction of the base, the second the provision of necessary equipment, and finally there will be the finishing touches."

"So often we hear about the negative things young people are doing but these boys have made a real effort and have actually met with considerable success.

The park will be in the grounds of Waterside Farm sports centre, in Somnes Avenue on the island.
