A shop worker was bitten on the arm as he tried to detain a thief who had stolen 400 cigarettes.
The incident happened at about 7.45pm last night at Somerfields, Spa Road, Hockley.
A white man, wearing dark clothing entered the store and grabbed the packets of cigarettes.
He then ran out of the store and was pursued by a member of staff.
The thief was eventually caught in the car park and a struggle ensued.
The shop staff member was then bitten on the arm and the thief jumped in to a dark car and made his escape.
