A long summer of disruption and delays could be on the cards for drivers in Witham.
A second major route through the town looks certain to be closed by roadworks this summer.
Gas supplier Transco has given notice that the gas main underneath Bridge Street is in need of replacement between the Mill Lane and Spinks Lane junctions.
Essex County Council has already announced that, depending on funding and planning permission, it will close Maldon Road during the school summer holidays to strengthen Saul's Bridge.
The gas main work in Bridge Street is scheduled to begin on about May 17 and last for six weeks, throughout which the important road link will be closed and traffic diverted along Spinks Lane, Guithavon Road and Mill Lane.
Traffic on the A12 will be informed of the work and warned of delays and possible disruption.
