Plans are afoot to make Braintree district's town centres safer.
The current closed circuit television (CCTV) system, which operates more than 100 lenses, could be in line for a six-figure boost.
CCTV cameras in Braintree and Witham town centres could potentially be upgraded by the end of May.
The subject of CCTV around the town was discussed at a meeting of the Town Centre Strategy Group in January.
George Shiffner, the group's secretary, revealed at the meeting he had written to the out-going leader of Braintree Council, David Finch, about the cameras in the minutes of Braintree's crime prevention panel.
Views were expressed at the meeting that the cameras required further hi-tech digital technology.
Since then, a time frame for a consultation has been set where it would be improved.
