Traffic bosses have looked at five alternative routes for the widening of Priory Crescent following the discovery of a Saxon king's tomb.

But a public inquiry into the controversial scheme was told each of the alternatives was ruled out as none was preferable to the existing proposal.

Southend Council assistant director of technical services Graham Dare said each alternative route would have either lead to increased cost, loss of a business or have an unacceptable impact on Priory Park.

He told inquiry inspector Allan Blackley: "I am satisfied none of these alternatives is preferable to the proposed route."
