A patient is being treated at a Colchester hospital for suspected meningitis.
The patient, who has not been named, is currently being treated at Colchester General Hospital.
A spokesman for the hospital said that while meningitis is a serious disease, it is not uncommon.
Last year, there were five cases in north-east Essex, the same in 2002 and seven in 2001.
Meningitis is an inflammation of the lining surrounding the brain. It can be caused by a range of organisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi.
