An urgent review of security is to take place at a supermarket after a man wandered into the warehouse, attacked the manager and locked him up.

Boss Tony Hought had gone to the back of the Co-op store in Church Road, Thundersley, when he came across the man.

Mr Hought asked the intruder what he was doing and the man said he wanted to use the toilet.

Mr Hought immediately told him to leave and said he was going to call the police.

At that point, trouble flared and the pair became involved in a scuffle.

The shop manager was knocked to the floor and was then locked in the warehouse before the intruder fled.

A police spokesman said the intruder was a scruffy white man.

He was of a slight build, about 5ft 10in tall and between 30 and 35 years old.

He had closely cropped to balding hair and was wearing a light blue sweatshirt, dark, dirty jeans and off-white trainers.

Anyone who can help the police with information about the attack, which happened at 10am on Monday, is asked to contact them by calling 01268 756221.
