A man was slashed in the face and stabbed in the back during a vicious street attack.

The 29-year-old victim was assaulted in Eastbrook Mews, Pitsea, at 12.35pm yesterday. He managed to walk a short distance to Rectory Road before collapsing.

Staff from a nearby shop called an ambulance, and paramedics arrived to find the wounded man lying in the street.

Paul Leverett, operations manager at Basildon ambulance station, said: "When we arrived, the man was on the floor with some people attending to him.

"He had been stabbed in the back with a sharp instrument and also had a superficial facial injury. "The injury to his back was serious but not life threatening."

The attack victim was taken to Basildon General Hospital, where he was kept in overnight for treatment.
