Chalvedon School in Wickford Avenue, Pitsea, formally opened the Robert Ford Learning Centre, in memory of the school's first headmaster.
Mr Ford's widow, Jean, was at the launch of the state-of-the-art building, which can hold up to 120 students and features 60 computers.
Headteacher Alan Roach said: "Mr Ford was headmaster at Chalvedon School for 22 years.
"I took over from him so the school has only had two heads and carries on the firm foundations he put in place."
