Plans for a major development in Shoebury have been halted after permission for the project was refused.
An planning application had been made to use vacant land next to the Asda store in North Shoebury as a residential and business development with new road access.
The plan also included an extension to Shoebury Park.
However, members of Southend Council's development control committee refused to give permission because it would have meant the loss of an area designated as public open space in the local plan.
