A planned visit by the BBC's Songs of Praise to Harwich has been cancelled.

Harwich was looking forward to the visit in June as part of its celebrations to mark the 400th anniversary of its Royal Charter.

But now the BBC has said it will not be coming.

Filming was to take place at St Nicholas's Church, Harwich, and the nationwide broadcast would have been in September.

Canon Stephen Hardie said he was disappointed the long-running television show would not be a part of the town's charter celebrations.

He said: "I think they were looking for a seaside holiday town and Harwich and Dovercourt are more of marine rather than seaside towns."

A spokeswoman for the BBC show confirmed the visit would not now take place, but that it may be possible to visit at some point in the future.
