A new education programme aimed at helping teenagers get into the aviation industry took off at Stansted.

Local celebrity, and former star of BBC's Airport, Jeremy Spake launched the Airport Entry To Education (E2E) scheme at the airport's Hilton hotel last Wednesday.

The 22-week scheme is aimed at people aged 16-19, and will give them a grounding in working at an airport or in aviation.

It will be accredited nationally, and courses will be held at Braintree College in Braintree and Redbridge College in Ilford.

Learners will be paid a start and progression bonus, and will also qualify for a weekly allowance for the duration of the course.

Students will get a passport and security clearance on the course, which will also offer them flights in the UK and to European destinations, along with a tour of a European airport.

If successful the course will be rolled out across the UK and the rest of the EU, serving many airports.

A spokesman for the event said the launch had gone well, with lots of people expressing an interest.
