Basildon-based Brian Salmon is back on the big time snooker scene - and determined to be in the pink on his second attempt to conquer the world's stars.

Salmon, 25, who lives in Corringham, won the third of this season's Pontin's Holidays Challenge Tour events and a £5,000 cash prize at Prestatyn, Wales.

He played a total of seven matches for this success -- the last being a 6-1 victory over former full tour star Steve James in a best of 11 final.

On his way his victims included another household name from the green baize, Tony Knowles.

This tournament victory plus a run of five wins in the Embassy World qualifiers currently sees him number one on the Challenge Order of Merit.

And, with just one event to go, Salmon is sure of a place in the top three - let alone the leading 16 who automatically qualify for next season's main pro tour.

Salmon, who is sponsored by Basildon-based building refurbisher Dave Gibson, finished his match with James in classic style with a 106 clearance.

He said: "To beat a player with Steve's record so convincingly in the final was great for my confidence."
