Radiation screening could soon be coming to Stansted - but the Government is remaining tight-lipped over the exact details.

The Government has unveiled a multi-million pound move to screen all traffic entering the UK, including passengers and freight, for radioactivity.

The screening scheme, dubbed Operation Cyclamen, will be run by the Home Office and HM Customs.

The equipment will be installed at all points of entry into the UK to detect any radioactive materials being smuggled into the country.

All passengers, parcels and freight entering Britain will be screened to prevent people smuggling in radioactive materials that could be used to make a 'dirty bomb'.

Mobile radiation scanners are also planned.

A Home Office spokesman confirmed the equipment would be installed at all points of entry into the UK, but would not give details of installation dates for security reasons.

He added: "Customs officers will use the equipment to detect any materials of a radioactive nature."

The initiative was announced last week by Foreign Secretary Jack Straw as part of the war on terrorism.
