Stansted Airport's emergency procedure was triggered after a pilot noticed smoke in his cockpit.

Passengers were ordered to evacuate the Aurigny Air Services flight to Guernsey as it stood at the stand before take-off, about 7pm yesterday.

Firefighters were called in line with standard airport procedure but the pilot managed to put out the fire with on-board fire extinguishers before they arrived on the scene.

A Stansted Airport spokesman said: "The pilot indicated he thought he had a problem but it was dealt with by himself before the fire crews got there."
