Brentford boss Wally Downes was ready to turn back the clock today to sign his former Wimbledon bootboy Scott Fitzgerald.

The experienced 34-year-old ex-Colchester United club captain and former Republic of Ireland Under-21 international central defender is set to quit Layer Road after Downes invited him to Griffin Park for training yesterday.

Fitzgerald, who asked for a move three weeks ago in a bid to play first team football told the Evening Gazette: "If things work out well for me I'll be very keen to join the Bees.

"I used to clean Wally Downes' boots when he was a Wimbledon player and I was an apprentice with the Dons.

"I'm not really needed at Colchester and I haven't played regular first team football since last November. I need to do that for my own sanity.

"But I can't say too much at this time because I haven't spoken to Wally Downes at any length yet."
