Southend United striker Drewe Broughton is determined to fire the Shrimpers to safety after finally ending his Roots Hall goal drought against Scunthorpe United last Friday.

The 24-year-old forward cooly converted his first home league goal for the resurgent Seasiders during the comprehensive 4-2 triumph.

And he is now confident of improving his eight-goal tally during the remainder of the season.

"I didn't realise it was my first home league goal for Southend but I was just pleased to see it go in because I hadn't scored for five games going into the match," said the former Kidderminster Harriers front-runner.

"I saw Mark Gower getting ready for the cross so I made an early run at the back post and, with seven matches still to go, hopefully I can get a few more before the end."

Broughton, who signed for the Shrimpers on a free transfer during the summer, also admitted he was confident of helping Steve Tilson's side maintain their Third Division status.

"You would like to think we're safe from relegation now but we need to keep on going because things can change quite quickly at this level," he said.

"We'll keep going until it's mathematically impossible for us to be relegated but, with the way we've been playing since the start of 2004, we certainly don't look like a team going down."
