Secret deals are being brokered which could lead to the closure of post offices in Southend, a Tory MP said today.

Compensation payouts are being discussed with at least one sub-postmaster in the Southend East and Rochford area even before the closure of his post office has been revealed, Sir Teddy Taylor said.

A Government review of post offices in Southend West and Rayleigh has already led to almost a dozen post office closures with Leigh being badly affected.

The results of an analysis of post offices in the Southend East and Rochford constituency is expected in June and it is anticipated a number of post offices could face the axe.

Sir Teddy added: "It is no secret that because of financial problems and the alleged change in consumer practices, the Post Office is carrying out a substantial closure of local post offices.

"In the meantime, I have come across one case, and there may be others, in which compensation for closure is being negotiated with the sub-postmaster."
