Former Beirut hostage Terry Waite was in Colchester to share his experiences of captivity.
Former Beirut hostage Terry Waite has been visiting Essex University.
Mr Waite gave a talk at Essex University to about 300 members of the Essex Agricultural Society last night. The society's aim is to promote the county's agricultural industry.
Chris Willett, the organiser of the event, said: "Mr Waite was fascinating. His talk was largely about his time in Beirut and about negotiations with hostage takers.
"It all went very well. For us, these events are a great way of getting our members together from the agricultural industry."
Mr Waite, 64, was an adviser to the Archbishop of Canterbury and negotiated the release of several hostages from Iran and Libya before being taken hostage himself in the Lebanon.
