Tesco could soon be seen in St John's, Colchester.
The company bought the One Stop chain of convenience stores, including the one at St Christopher's Parade, St John's, last year.
Now, it has applied to Colchester Council for permission to extend from the One Stop shop premises into the vacant video shop next door and use the extra space for additional retail and storage.
Paul Smith, Lib Dem councillor for St John's, said: "The feeling about this on the estate is very positive.
"We were worried when Tesco bought the One Stop convenience store that it would close it due to the proximity of the company's major store at High Woods.
"This application is seen as helping to keep the shops on the parade."
