Mersea islanders are set to decide whether they will fund the appointment of a police community support officer.
The idea was broached earlier this year by resident Peter Clements, who said he felt extra policing would deter vandalism and anti-social behaviour.
As a result, a meeting will be held at the town's MICA Centre on Friday, April 16, to give information and gauge public opinion.
A uniformed officer, who would have powers of arrest, would cost about £30,000 a year, with half being funded by the local community.
Mr Clements, who chairs the island's community association, said the proposal had met mixed reactions, with some islanders prepared to pay an expected additional £5 on their council precept.
Others, on the other hand, felt they already paid enough towards policing.
Mr Clements said speakers lined up for the 7.30pm meeting include borough councillor John Jowers, MICA vice-chairman Alan Mogridge and a senior Colchester police officer, who will handle residents' policing concerns.
