Opposition was today growing over plans to convert a historic seafront boathouse into a three-storey restaurant.
More than 100 people have signed a petition against the proposals for the old lifeboat house in Western Esplanade, Southend.
Paul Van Looy, who owns the neighbouring business, Van Looy's fish and chip shop, said: "It's unique. There's nothing like it left on the seafront and it's a shame it can't be used for something else.
"But it will only be about 12ft wide stretching back up the cliffs so how will they offer disabled access?"
