Leigh Community Centre is set for a £100,000 refit thanks to Southend Adult Community College.
Work will start on the interior of the Elm Road building when students take a summer break.
The alterations have been justified by a change to the Disability Discrimination Act.
This new section of the act says organisations must do all that is reasonably possible to make services and facilities accessible to people with disabilities.
The community centre will have a new lift installed in the stairwell as well as improvements to the layout of its upstairs rooms, making them accessible to people with mobility problems.
Upstairs, the stage will be removed to make better use of space and the hall divided into three teaching spaces.
Externally, the college will improve access by providing three parking bays, turning the ramp round to make it safe for users once the bays are in place and adjusting the handrails to follow the height of the steps leading up to the entrance.
Jill Warnes, principal of Southend Adult Community College manages the Leigh branch of the college.
She said: "The whole purpose of this project is to make the building accessible to all members of Leigh community."
