Marathon woman Lee-Anne Cann agreed at short notice to to take part in the London Marathon on April 18 in honour of her friend's son who suffers from Down's syndrome.

Bernadette Rignall, of Blenheim Chase, Leigh, originally had another volunteer lined up to raise money on behalf of her 13-month-old son Alex.

But the volunteer had to pull out because of an injury so Bernadette asked Lee-Anne, 28, of Shoebury, to do it instead.

She agreed but it left her just four months to train.

Bernadette said: "We have called the whole thing Running for Alex."
