Southend Sabres are still seeking new faces to strengthen their team for the American Football season, but chairman Hugh Cumberland was not too downhearted after an opening day defeat.

Despite being shut out by a powerful Essex Spartans squad in their local derby in Basildon, the Seaside squad are determined to keep plugging away this season.

"We have a small squad anyway and we were missing some players on Sunday but hopefully the lads can pick it up," said Cumberland.

"We've got a lot of rookies in the squad and this was their first experience of game-play.

"More training is required, but even with a pre-season scrimmage against Norwich we cannot really simulate a match for them."

Spartans won through at Gloucester Park with touchdowns from Jon Stott, Paul Simpson and Chris Bash, leaving Sabres to focus on their up-coming home clash with Chiltern Cheetahs at Warners Park on Sunday.

Anyone interested in getting involved with the Southend Sabres, as a junior or a senior player, should call Denis Richards on 01702 619941.
