US casino operators investing in Southend would have to provide transport improvements and maybe even restore public buildings.

The joint committee on the draft Gambling Bill called for careful monitoring of its impact, and restrictions on the development of Las Vegas-style super-casinos.

The committee also recommended developers planning so-called resort casinos should be required to include "regeneration benefits'' in their plans in order to secure a licence.

Benefits could include improved transport arrangements, restoration of historic buildings, the use of derelict sites and the provision of new job opportunities.

Southend town clerk George Krawiec said he welcomed the proposals by the committee which would be beneficial to the town if the council decided to go down the casino route.
