Wood, based at the St Cleres course in Stanford Road, took on the cream of the county's paid ranks golfers to shoot 144, two under par, and win by a stroke.

His victory was based on a fine three under par round of 70 in the morning in wind and rain at the Essex Golf and Country club, Earl's Colne.

And a one over 74 in the afternoon saw him home by a stroke from Clacton's Jason Levermore and Graham Burroughs, long-serving pro at the Boyce Hill Club in South Benfleet.

He said: "The conditions were far from easy with the wind and rain in the morning.

"The rain actually stopped during our second rounds, but most people had their best scores in the opening 18 holes.

"It was nice to get back to winning again, although I did have a pro-am success in Spain earlier this year."

In fact much of the golfing life of one-time Welsh international amateur Wood, who was based at Rochford before joining the paid ranks, is very much taken up with improving the golf game of others - he's been the pro at St Cleres for seven years now.
