Southend High did England proud in the 22-nation World Schools Cross-Country Championship in Lyon.

They took fifth team place in the boys' race in France with star member, Southend AC's Adam Hickey, collecting fourth individual spot over a 4,900m course.

His time of 13mins. 59secs was just two seconds outside a medal.

Southend High had 1-09 points with their other scorers being: 20, David Crichton (14.56); 40, Lewis Sheldrake ((15.56); 45, Peter Smale; 66, Nicholas Rawling.

The boys countries race saw Mark Bailey, a pupil at Westcliff High, finishing 25th and the team taking fourth spot over 5,500m.

Another team in the cross-country finishing fourth were the Eastern Region line-up in the British Colleges Championship at Loughborough.

In a field of 78, star local runner was Basildon AC's Kirsty Tydeman a student at Southend's South East Essex College, who came seventh.

The college were hoping for more success in the race, but another Basildon AC athlete Annie Lingard had to withdraw through injury.

However, two students from Thundersley's SEEVIC College, Nikita Aspinall and Sarah Jeffrey, both members of Southend AC,were in the Eastern team.
