Parents are being urged to ensure their children are not up to mischief after a spate of vandalism over the Easter holiday.
Police have blamed bored youngsters for dozens of incidents across Wickford, Basildon and South Woodham Ferrers which resulted in thousands of pounds of damage.
Worst hit appears to have been South Woodham. Windows in the village hall and in various shops in the town centre have been smashed in the vandalism spree. Telephone kiosks have also been targeted.
Ray Stannard, crime reduction officer for the town, said more than 20 offences had been reported, ranging from broken windows to damaged boats.
He said: "There has been an outbreak of criminal damage over the school holidays. As most are relatively minor offences, it's thought they have been carried out by children. Parents should make sure where their youngsters are and what they are doing at all times."
