Vandals smashed a charity wishing well on Clacton seafront after failing in a bid to steal a few pounds.

They caused hundreds of pounds of damage to the canopy of the well, which stands in the memorial gardens near the Venetian bridge.

It belongs to Clacton Inner Wheel, which collects coins for deserving causes.

Irma Connelly, who is responsible for looking after the site, said she was absolutely disgusted.

"I really do not know how low some people will go," she said.
