A hamster owner called 999 because her pet was missing under the floorboards
Jan Armstrong and Jessie
Jan Armstrong asked for a fire crew to go to her Colchester home to pull up floorboards and help rescue the runaway rodent.
The 34-year-old mother-of-two, of Cotswold Court, High Woods, hunted for hours to try to find two-year-old Jessie after it vanished on Monday night.
At first she thought the hamster was downstairs, so she moved furniture and even pulled out her dishwasher to try to find it.
Then she realised the pet was in the ceiling, under her bedroom floor.
Miss Armstrong said: "I looked everywhere. I pulled everything out. I was waking up through the night. I couldn't sleep."
Colchester's fire station commander Andy Stapleton said: "We render humanitarian services wherever possible."
