Campaigners have called for a floodline telephone system for Canvey and for the island's flood evacuation plans to be reinstated nearly ten years after they were abandoned.

South East Essex Green Party has proposed its own emergency procedures to Castle Point Council following constant reports of rising tides and worsening weather conditions.

Canvey's population has increased by 300 per cent since 1953 when the island was devastated by a midnight tidal surge which claimed 59 lives.

The Green Party's strategy would include prosecution of people, other than disabled residents, attempting to drive off the island once the alarm had been raised, the installation of a floodline telephone system and accommodation for 40,000 people being earmarked on the mainland.

Spokesperson Irene Willis said: "I acknowledge the seawalls built around Canvey are only expected to flood once in a thousand years, but climate change is increasing the severity and frequency of storms."
