A young couple were robbed by thugs who clubbed the boyfriend with a wooden pole.

The pair were walking along Roots Hall Drive in Southend, at 10.55pm on Friday when they were pounced on from behind by two men.

They wrenched the handbag from the 21-year-old woman before beating her 24-year-old partner with the wooden pole.

The man suffered injuries to his face and legs in the attack. The handbag contained a mobile phone.

One robber is white, of medium build, in his twenties, 5ft 8ins tall, with blond shaven hair.

He was wearing a navy T-shirt, with a dark top around his waist, dark trousers and white trainers.

The other was white, slim to medium build, aged 16 to 19, 5ft 8in tall and wearing a red hooded top. Anyone with information should call police on 01702 431212.
