Police today appealed for witnesses to a road crash which claimed a woman's life.

The 60-year-old victim, who lived in Suffolk but worked in Colchester, was travelling to Stansted Airport in a taxi to catch a flight when the accident happened.

The crash, which involved four vehicles and injured three other people, happened at the junction of the A120 and Warehouse Road, Stebbing, at 4.40am on Saturday.

The fatally injured woman, who suffered head, leg and abdominal injuries and died later that day, was in a red Toyota Carina taxi which was involved in a collision with a silver Citroen C5 travelling in the opposite direction towards Braintree.

Her 63-year-old husband, who was also in the taxi, was taken to hospital with chest injuries and later discharged.

The driver of a Volkswagen Golf which was involved in a collision with the wreckage, a 25-year-old Maldon woman, is in a stable condition in hospital with serious facial injuries, while her male passenger was uninjured.

A 25-year-old Ipswich woman driving a Peugeot 106 which was also involved in a collision with the other vehicles was uninjured.

The 36-year-old male taxi driver, from Great Cornard, Suffolk, was uninjured, while the driver of the Citroen, a 30-year-old Braintree man, was taken to hospital with chest and leg injuries and discharged later that day.
