Basildon MP Angela Smith joined Labour leader Paul Kirkman and other councillors and prospective candidates to launch the campaign for the June 10 elections.
Speaking from the launch outside the Basildon Centre, in St Martin's Square, Basildon, Councillor Paul Kirkman was in upbeat mood.
He said: "We are always bullish about our chances and have targeted three key seats that we want to win back.
"If elected we intend to block any new waste facilities, improve road and footpaths, subsidise senior citizen bus passes and provide more youth facilities."
