A nightclub faces strong opposition in its bid to extend its opening hours, with claims the move will result in more crime, noise and disturbance in the area.

JBR Leisure has applied to extend the opening hours of Route, in Colchester's Queen Street.

The club is currently open from 10am to midnight Monday to Thursday, 10am until 1am on Friday and Saturday, and from 11am until midnight on Sundays.

Members of Colchester Council's planning committee have been recommended to approve new opening times of 10am until 1am Monday to Wednesday and 10am until 2am Thursday to Saturday, when they meet on Thursday.

But Priory Residents' Association, Colchester Civic Society and agents representing Chicago Rock Cafe, which is just across the road from Route, have objected to the plans.

They have said later opening hours mid-week will be "intolerable", and will result in more crime, noise and disturbance.

But council officers do not believe the proposal will result in any unacceptable, additional impact on the noise or disturbance in the area.
