A teenager was left needing reconstructive surgery to her face after accepting a lift from a stranger.
The 19-year-old, of West Mersea, accepted a lift home from Colchester when she was unable to find a taxi in the early hours of Friday morning.
A police spokesman said it was believed the woman had been assaulted.
She had to have reconstructive surgery at the weekend to repair a broken jaw and damage to her eye sockets.
About 1am she walked to Flagstaff Road, near St John's Abbeygate, to try to get a taxi, but ended up accepting a lift from a car which was not a taxi.
The car was a dark-coloured three-door hatchback and it is believed that there was only one person inside
Police said the girl who was assaulted was wearing a black short-sleeve top, a beige-coloured short skirt and similar coloured knee-length boots
