A man was today behind bars for assaulting a policeman who was trying to arrest his friend.

Gary McCready, 20, of Newberry Side, Laindon, elbowed the officer in the head because he felt police were being too aggressive, a court was told.

McCready pleaded guilty to the assault in Bourne Close, Laindon, at Basildon Magistrates' Court.

Four months after the December 30 incident, McCready was seen driving a Ford Fiesta in Highlands Avenue, Vange, which was stolen.

McCready pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance at Basildon Magistrates' Court.

McCready was sentenced to four months in a Young Offenders' Institution for aggravated vehicle taking, with four months concurrently for driving while disqualified.

He also received a one month concurrent sentence for assaulting a police officer.
