Joe Royle was today hoping to complete the signing of inspirational Wigan Athletic skipper Jason De Vos.
The Ipswich Town boss was meeting the Canadian centre-half this afternoon, hopeful of luring him to Portman Road.
Town face a three-way fight to sign De Vos, who has also attracted interest from Cardiff City and Stoke City.
Wigan are also keen to keep hold of their captain, whose contract ran out at the end of the season. That means he is available on a Bosman free transfer.
Royle said: "Jason had an exceptional season for Wigan.
"I see him very much in the same mould as Matt Elliott.
"Even in our last game of the season, we conceded two goals from corners in the play-off match at West Ham.
"Mistakes like that blighted our season and it's certainly an area we need to improve in."
