An illegal immigrant who made a mental health patient pregnant through unlawful sex on his first day as her carer has been jailed for two years.

Machingura will be deported to Zimbabwe on his release

Tawanda Sydny Machingura, 33, from Westcliff, was employed as a care worker at Runwell Hospital when he targeted the vulnerable 27-year-old.

It is believed the man - originally from Zimbabwe - got the job by using a forged Home Office document stating he had permanent residency in the UK.

Today, shocked south Essex MPs called for an urgent investigation into how Machingura got the job in the first place.

Investigating officer, Det Con Christine Thomas, from Wickford CID, called it a "truly horrendous incident" carried out when the victim was at her most vulnerable.

The assault took place on June 8 last year on Machingura's first day at the hospital in Runwell Chase.

After the assault the South Essex Partnership Trust - which runs Runwell - investigated their use of agency staff and Medway is no longer on their approved list.

Machingura was sentenced to 15 months for unlawful sexual intercourse with a mental defective and given nine months for using a false instrument.

He pleaded guilty to both charges at Basildon Crown Court on Thursday.
