Canvey Island skipper Neil Gregory admitted his Conference bound side were deservedly beaten by Hednesford Town at Villa Park in the FA Trophy final.

The experienced former Ipswich Town and Colchester United striker was unable to prevent the Park Lane side crashing to a 3-2 defeat but revealed he had been impressed by a well organised and hard working Hednesford.

"It was hugely disappointing but you have to give credit to Hednesford," said Gregory.

"They battled hard and worked their socks off. When we went 2-1 up I thought we might nick it but they hit back and got a good win which they deserved to be honest."

Gregory added Canvey had started Sunday's eagerly anticipated final slowly but admitted he was proud of his team-mates following a memorable season.

"We didn't pass it around on the floor enough but that's not taking anything away from Hednesford. They played a great game and won the Trophy," he said.
