Concerns about the impact of a proposed travellers' site in a north Essex village brought residents out in force to express their views.

About 40 people turned up to the annual meeting of Marks Tey Parish Council, 39 more than usual, according to chairman Nigel Fitch.

They wanted to discuss plans to build a private travellers' site on agricultural land in Little Tey. The application is for a change of use from agricultural and grazing land at land off Church Lane, Little Tey, to create a private travellers' site.

The applicant Smart Planning, of Ongar, has submitted a design for a cul de sac street with 12 units, each with an amenity block and an area of concrete hardstanding.

Chairman Nigel Fitch said: "There is no room in the schools for them. Whether there will be ten or 100, we will not get them in."

Residents were urged to write to Colchester Council's planning department with their views about the application. The plan will be discussed at Marks Tey Parish Council meeting on Monday, June 7. A further public meeting is being held tonight at Little Tey parish church at 7.30pm.
