Betty Jeffery of Mill Green, Pitsea, left handicapped by polio, had an appointment at the hospital yesterday.

But when she arrived at the disabled parking area at the outpatient department, eight spaces had been taken up by building material, and the remaining places were full.

Desperate not to miss her appointment, Mrs Jeffery parked in the ambulance area as the main parking area was too far to push herself in a wheelchair.

Mrs Jeffery said: "They are increasing the size of the building but not the parking.

A hospital spokesman said: "We have created 13 new disabled parking bays over the last two weeks."
