Police today urged Canvey families to lock up their plants after a spate of hanging-basket thefts.

Five hanging baskets full of fuchsias and a wooden barrow full of flowers were snatched from a garden in West Crescent. The haul is worth £140.

PC Kevin Hemsworth said: "We encourage anyone with hanging baskets either to make the chain secure or to put them at a height which is difficult to reach."
