Rail passengers face a fares hike just weeks after train operator One took over services.

Cheap tickets which were available from Anglian Railways and Great Eastern are being scrapped as part of the fares shake-up.

It means an end to cheap day returns from Colchester to London for a tenner. Passengers will still be able to make the journey for £11 but only if they buy their tickets a day in advance.

Train operator One said the move simplifies the pricing system for passengers.

A spokesman said Great Eastern and Anglian Railways had been forced to offer the low fares to compete with each other. "The cheap tickets were never commercially sustainable," he said. "They were very much driven by the competition factor and were kept artificially low because you had two operators competing for the business."
