Commuters today suffered a reminder of the old Misery Line days when c2c services were disrupted as overhead power lines failed between Shoebury and Southend.
Passengers arriving at Southend Central station during the morning rush hour were told no trains would run for at least two hours.
Commuters heading for London were faced with switching to the One services from Southend Victoria station or taking long bus rides.
One victim was Southend Rail Travellers' Association chairman Peter Slattery. He said: "We're not very happy because it's this line suffering again."
A c2c spokesman confirmed the company was running relief shuttle buses the complete length of the line from Shoebury to London Fenchurch Street station.
He added: "It was a difficult morning and we offer our sincere apologies and sympathies to passengers."
